NYFE Summary

This office belonged to a depot that supplied and repaired lighthouse equipment. Workers handled lenses, buoys, chains, anchors and fuel for lights serving New York and nearby waters. Storage vaults and workshops supported the work of keeping shipping routes marked and lit.

The National Lighthouse Museum occupies a separate building at the depot. It explains the site’s work and the lives of lighthouse keepers. Its displays include objects made or inspected on the site, lighthouse models and two Fresnel lenses. The museum also shows how lighthouse illumination changed from candles to electricity.
