NYFE Summary

The organization began as a Union-supporting club during the Civil War, long before it moved to this building. J. P. Morgan and Herbert Satterlee later assembled this site and imposed limits on the new clubhouse’s height and shape. Large social rooms occupy the lower section, with bedrooms in the U-shaped floors above.

A curved entrance pavilion faces the side street beneath a large triangular pediment. Tall windows divide the brick walls. The separate avenue entrance carries a relief of four female faces, recalling the rooms originally assigned to members’ wives and daughters.
