NYFE Summary

Railroad financier and newspaper publisher Henry Villard commissioned six townhouses arranged around a carriage courtyard. Their unified front made several homes look like one large palace. Villard had emigrated from Bavaria and worked as a journalist before entering the railroad business.

The courtyard, arched loggia, rusticated lower walls and broad cornice can be studied from Madison Avenue. The historic houses later became part of the hotel complex now known as Lotte New York Palace. The modern tower rises behind them.
