NYFE Summary
German immigrant Conrad Voelker bought the house in 1899 and commuted by train to his publishing and printing business in Manhattan. His family stayed for almost a century. The last surviving heir, Elizabetha Orth, left the house and grounds for a museum that would combine local history with environmental education.
Family furnishings and photographs remain part of the house’s displays. Tours explain the household and the growth of Flushing as a commuter suburb. Outside, the garden and bird sanctuary support nature programs alongside the museum’s exhibitions and workshops. The house and garden have separate visiting schedules.
