NYFE Summary

James Weeks and other African American investors bought land here in 1838, helping establish a community of free Black landowners before the Civil War. Surviving houses stand along the route of an older road. During the 1863 Draft Riots, the community sheltered people escaping violence in Manhattan.

The restored houses are interpreted through different periods and families, from the Civil War years to the twentieth century. Guided tours discuss those households and the community campaign that saved the buildings after their rediscovery in 1968.
