NYFE Summary

Western Electric made telephone equipment on this block before the complex became a Bell Telephone Laboratories research center. Engineers worked on developments in sound recording, television and communications. A former elevated freight line passed through part of the complex.

After Bell Labs moved away, the buildings became affordable homes and studios for artists. The conversion kept large industrial spaces in use for art and performance. Westbeth’s gallery continues to show work by residents and invited artists.
