Carroll Gardens-Cobble Hill-Gowanus-Red Hook
This broad mapped collection joins four familiar neighborhoods. Carroll Gardens has deep front gardens; Cobble Hill has varied nineteenth-century rows; Gowanus developed around its canal; Red Hook’s docks and warehouses face the harbor. Choose one setting before planning a visit.

Understanding Carroll Gardens-Cobble Hill-Gowanus-Red Hook
Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill grew with South Brooklyn’s nineteenth-century ferries, industry and housing. Red Hook’s docks expanded as harbor trade grew, then changed as container shipping shifted elsewhere. The Gowanus Canal was planned to serve industry inland from the docks. These histories connect the areas without making their names aliases.

The Waterfront Museum’s pedestrian approach crosses a private parking area; follow its published directions. Neither the house designations nor the canal’s history establish public interior entry or permission for water activity.
