Greenwich Village
Explore Greenwich Village through a public square, architecture exhibitions and artists' institutions. Washington Square Park supplies the outdoor focus, while the Center for Architecture and Salmagundi present public galleries.

Understanding Greenwich Village
Minetta Creek fed this marsh and supplied the nearby Lenape village of Sapokanikan. Free Black New Yorkers later farmed land that became part of Washington Square, and another portion became a potter's field. The city declared the expanded square public space in 1827. The arch and the twentieth-century campaign to remove vehicle traffic belong to later layers of that history.
The Village also contains sites of work and organized cultural life. Cornell's Triangle Fire archive records the 1911 factory fire in which 146 people died. Salmagundi, founded in 1871, represents another strand: an artists' organization that still presents public exhibitions.
