Pelham Bay-Country Club-City Island

City Island’s maritime museum, Pelham Bay’s shopping streets and Country Club’s former estate landscape explain different parts of this East Bronx collection. Choose the island museum or an inland street visit; Bartow-Pell is a separate park-and-mansion outing.

Understanding Pelham Bay-Country Club-City Island

City Island’s maritime economy included oyster harvesting, boatbuilding and sailmaking. The local museum preserves those working-waterfront histories through photographs, artifacts and islanders’ accounts.

Bartow-Pell preserves a nineteenth-century country-house setting in Pelham Bay Park. It is a separate destination from City Island, with its own entrance, grounds and interior-tour rules.

Pelham Bay developed around the early-twentieth-century rail terminal. The city’s 2006 planning account describes detached houses on interior blocks, apartments along wider avenues, and Westchester and Crosby avenues as commercial centers.

In Country Club, Villa Maria Academy moved from Manhattan to the Ellis estate in 1928. Its later school buildings and bayfront campus preserve an institutional use of that older estate landscape.

Places to explore

  • City Island Nautical Museum

    190 Fordham Street, City Island

Choose the museum for the island's maritime story. The operator publishes a limited seasonal weekend schedule and offers private tours by arrangement. Check its current calendar before traveling.

  • Westchester and Crosby avenues

    Pelham Bay’s inland commercial streets

Choose the public shopping streets for a neighborhood stop beyond the island and large park. The planning history explains the contrast with the detached-house blocks. Check individual businesses for their current services; the old study is not a current directory.

  • Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

    Nearby, inside Pelham Bay Park

Choose the grounds and formal garden or a guided mansion visit. The mansion has entrance steps, three floors and no elevator; do not infer a step-free interior visit from the open grounds.

Planning a visit

Villa Maria Academy publishes an online campus tour for its Country Club setting. That is a way to see the institution’s context remotely; its grounds, school rooms and waterfront are not established as public visitor areas. City Island marinas and boatyards also retain their own access rules.

Visitor update

The City Island museum’s checked 2026 season ends on 25 October. Its next season and any off-season arrangements need a fresh operator check.
