Spring Creek-Starrett City
Starrett City’s housing and recreation history provide a residential counterpoint to nearby Jamaica Bay parkland. Brooklyn Sports Club is a local membership-based option for swimming and fitness. Spring Creek Library and Shirley Chisholm State Park are nearby choices with separate mapped locations.

Understanding Spring Creek-Starrett City
Starrett City is also part of the history of middle-income housing in New York. The Comptroller’s historical Mitchell-Lama inventory records occupancy beginning in 1974. Its residential buildings are people’s homes; that history does not make lobbies, recreation facilities or landscaped grounds unrestricted visitor space.
The community also built its own local media. The first Starrett City Sun appeared in June 1974, before the early housing blocks filled with residents. Its archive followed the recreation center, schools and shopping center as they developed. The newspaper continues as the Spring Creek Sun, now published through The Opportunity Hub.
In a 2024 interview, longtime resident Rafaela Viera recalled arriving in 1975 while construction continued and some services occupied temporary trailers. The interview also describes children's groups, gardening and neighborhood organizations. It adds the everyday work of building a community to the development's formal housing history.
Places to explore
Brooklyn Sports Club
1540 Van Siclen AvenueThe club offers month-to-month and annual memberships as well as separate plans for Spring Creek Towers residents. Membership covers courts and group exercise; swim lessons and some classes cost extra. Confirm current availability before planning a paid activity.
Spring Creek Library, nearby in East New York
12143 Flatlands Avenue at New Jersey Avenue; outside the Spring Creek-Starrett City outlineThe branch’s 1977 opening is part of the area’s institutional history. BPL publishes its own hours and programs; use the actual address rather than a broad shore-area pin.
Shirley Chisholm State Park, nearby
Separate state-park map areaThe park occupies capped Pennsylvania and Fountain landfills. Use the operator’s map to choose the Penn or Fountain side, an entrance and an overlook or trail. A park pin alone does not select the correct side for your visit.
Planning a visit
Use 1540 Van Siclen Avenue for the sports club and verify current service to that address. Spring Creek Library lists B6/B20/B82/B83/B103 connections, but its 12143 Flatlands Avenue address lies in East New York. Plan the state park separately to the chosen entrance.
The sports club’s displayed swim term is in the past, so confirm the next session and any nonmember arrangements before planning a lesson. Pool and entrance accessibility remain unverified. BPL lists full accessibility at the nearby Spring Creek Library.
