Spring Creek

Spring Creek’s Gateway area combines housing, shops and streets laid out through successive development plans. Gateway Center and the Gateway Elton and Nehemiah housing developments offer different views of how the area has changed.

About Spring Creek

The City Planning Commission’s Gateway Estates II plan in 2009 proposed housing, retail, parkland and community facilities in Spring Creek. Its plan reshaped the street and land-use pattern around Elton Street and Vandalia Avenue. A planning proposal describes intended development, not proof that every element was completed.

The Gateway Elton project brought affordable apartments and ground-floor commercial space to several addresses. Nehemiah Spring Creek was developed in phases as well; the city’s housing listing describes Phase 4C as a group of 30 residential buildings.

Places to explore

  • Gateway Center

    501 Gateway Drive

The shopping center has south and north sections. The operator dates the south center to 2002 and the north expansion to 2014. Check the directory for individual store hours and use the center’s address when planning a trip.

  • Gateway Elton

Elton Street at Egan Street, including 1166 Elton Street

Gateway Elton I includes affordable apartments in four buildings, with commercial and community space. The address offers a street-side view of the housing component of the wider Gateway development; the residential buildings are not public visitor interiors.

  • Nehemiah Spring Creek

Vandalia Avenue near Gateway Drive, including 429 Vandalia Avenue

Phase 4C is a group of 30 residential buildings listed by NYC Housing Connect. See the buildings from public streets and respect residents’ entrances and private spaces.

Planning a visit

The city’s housing information lists the B13, B83, B84 and Q8 among bus connections for Nehemiah Spring Creek. Check the MTA’s current map and service notices for your specific stop, and consult Gateway Center’s directory for shop hours.

The Gateway Elton and Nehemiah addresses are homes. Plan those as sidewalk observations, and check individual businesses’ entrances and schedules at Gateway Center.
