NYFE Summary

The armory was built as a home and training center for the Black regiment known as the Harlem Hellfighters. Its soldiers had served in France during the First World War. A drill shed and an administration building were completed in separate phases.

The long brick front combines the mass of an older fortress-like armory with more geometric decoration. Narrow windows and projecting upper sections mark the administration block. The building preserves a physical link to the regiment's place in Harlem's history.
