NYFE Summary

Andrew Freedman's will funded a home for older people who had once been financially comfortable but had become poor. Residents received rooms and meals, and married couples could stay together. Shared spaces included a library, dining room and rooms for cards and billiards.

The building later became a base for community services and arts activity. Its current programs provide artist residencies, workshops, exhibitions and film screenings. These uses bring visitors into a building once organized around the private daily life of its residents.
