NYFE Summary

This public project gave work to architects, sculptors and construction crews during the Great Depression. When the building opened, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia moved the seat of city government here for three days. The occasion also marked the county’s twentieth anniversary.

Charles Keck’s carved frieze shows work in agriculture, commerce, industry and the arts. Pink marble figures beside the entrance stairs represent government and law. The broad stairs and terraces make these sculptures part of the building’s public-facing design.
