NYFE Summary

Bronx community advocates founded the museum in response to urban decline and discriminatory practices such as redlining. Its exhibitions and collection have long emphasized artists of color and others whose work was overlooked by major institutions.

The museum also supports artists through its AIM fellowship, begun in 1980. Visitors can see contemporary art in changing exhibitions, while public programs and education projects connect artists with local residents. Admission fees were removed in 2012.
