NYFE Summary

This building once combined the mayor’s office, city council, courtroom and jail. It served Brooklyn when it was a separate city. After Brooklyn joined New York City in 1898, it became the borough’s government headquarters.

From the plaza, visitors can see the marble front, broad staircase and six-column entrance. The clock cupola replaced an earlier tower destroyed by fire in 1895. The exterior underwent a major restoration in the 1980s.
