NYFE Summary

Carnegie Hall’s history includes jazz and popular music alongside orchestral concerts. Benny Goodman led a swing concert here in 1938. Duke Ellington introduced Black, Brown and Beige in 1943, and the Beatles made their New York concert debut here in 1964. A campaign led by violinist Isaac Stern helped save the hall from demolition.

The complex contains three performance spaces: the large Stern Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall and the lower-level Zankel Hall. The Rose Museum displays material from the hall’s performance history. Concert bookings identify the particular hall, while the museum has its own visiting arrangements.
