NYFE Summary

Long before Ellis Island opened, this former fort processed immigrants arriving in New York. More than eight million people passed through Castle Garden between 1855 and 1890. It had already served as an entertainment venue, where Jenny Lind made her American debut.

The building later housed the New York Aquarium. Saved from demolition, it was restored as a fort by the National Park Service. Visitors can enter the open courtyard and see exhibits about its changing uses.
