NYFE Summary
The chapel was built for residents of the island’s almshouse. Banker George M. Bliss funded it through the Protestant Episcopal Mission Society. Its two original entrance porches separated the men and women arriving from the institution.
After closing in 1958, the chapel was restored and reopened in 1975 as the island became a residential neighborhood. Its red brick, gray stone base and brownstone details can be studied from the surrounding plaza. RIOC now identifies it as a community center.
