NYFE Summary

Ansche Chesed has occupied several buildings as New York’s Jewish communities moved through the city. Its early members included German, Dutch and Polish immigrants. A former synagogue on Norfolk Street is now the Angel Orensanz Center. After membership declined in the 1970s, small, member-led prayer groups helped rebuild congregational life.

The present sanctuary has a barrel-vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows honoring congregation members. The attached community building provides space for several prayer groups and other activities. Architectural tours are arranged with the synagogue, allowing visitors to see the interior around services and community activities.
