NYFE Summary

Raw sugar moved through three connected buildings. It was mixed with water and filtered through canvas and charcoal, reduced to syrup, then dried and graded for sale. The refinery grew into a large employer on the waterfront.

The industry’s early supply depended on sugar grown by enslaved workers in the American South and Caribbean. Refining here ended in 2004. The brick factory exterior and restored yellow sign remain beside a public park that displays salvaged equipment, including syrup tanks and conveyors.
