NYFE Summary

The NAACP kept its national office here from 1914 to 1923. W. E. B. Du Bois edited The Crisis, and his publishing partnership with Augustus Granville Dill produced The Brownies’ Book for young Black readers. Other tenants included the organization that became the American Civil Liberties Union.

Publisher George A. Plimpton commissioned the building for offices and book-related businesses. Open-book motifs in the original entrance decoration and upper metal grilles refer to that work. Pale brick and stone window frames line its long street front.
