NYFE Summary
Artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortiz founded the museum in 1969 with Puerto Rican parents, educators, artists and activists. They wanted a museum for artists whose work was largely absent from mainstream institutions. Its first home was a public-school classroom.
The collection covers Caribbean, Latin American and Latino art, from Taíno objects to modern painting, photography and video. The galleries present changing exhibitions drawn from these traditions.
