NYFE Summary
The school began as a private academy supported by Flatbush residents. It later entered the public school system as the area’s population grew. New school wings were arranged around an open courtyard so that the older wooden academy could remain at the center.
The outer buildings use entrance towers, projecting windows and battlement-like rooflines to form a nearly continuous street front. Later sections are simpler but keep the main forms. The historic academy is inside the active school campus, rather than an independently open museum.
