NYFE Summary

The Shuberts commissioned this house for actress Ethel Barrymore and arranged a play for her to premiere there. She appeared in The Kingdom of God, then returned for several later productions. A Raisin in the Sun opened here in 1959 with Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.

A large terra-cotta screen fills the arched opening above the entrance. Its repeating grid and the curved wall above it give the facade a different outline from neighboring theaters. Inside, the stage boxes have sunburst decoration over columns.
