NYFE Summary

The store’s move from Sixth Avenue helped turn this stretch of Fifth Avenue into a major shopping district. The building grew in stages across the block, with the final Madison Avenue section rising higher than the original front.

Tall columns and large windows give the Fifth Avenue facade the appearance of an Italian palace. Part of the former store now houses the CUNY Graduate Center, where the James Gallery presents public art exhibitions.
