NYFE Summary

Successive congregations adapted this building as the neighborhood changed. It began as a Universalist church, became Temple Israel’s synagogue and later served the Polish Catholic parish of St. Casimir. Each group used the same basic street-facing structure.

Physician and community activist Josephine English bought the building in 1980 and converted it into the Paul Robeson Theatre. Round-arched windows, a central tower and its later spire remain visible outside.
