NYFE Summary

Brooklyn’s first plans for a central grammar school reflected disagreement over how much education the public should fund. When the new building opened, rising enrollment meant it could take only the girls’ department. The boys remained elsewhere until they received their own school.

The long brick front rises around a central entrance tower and two projecting end sections. Steep roofs, dormers and stone window details vary the outline. A later addition continued the school along Macon Street.
