NYFE Summary

The designers fitted a large pool complex into a narrow hillside below a rocky cliff. Locker rooms were placed upstairs so they could connect directly to pools above the street. The project brought Depression-era public recreation investment to Harlem.

From the avenue, the bathhouse looks almost like a small fortress. Rounded towers, tall recessed arches and heavy brick supports give the street front its shape. Curving walls, terraces and paths carry related forms into the surrounding park.
