NYFE Summary

Charles Leslie and Fritz Lohman began showing art by gay artists in their loft in 1969. Their collection grew over the following decades. During the AIDS crisis, they saved work by dying artists whose families intended to destroy it.

That collection developed into a foundation and later an accredited museum. Changing exhibitions and public programs present art shaped by queer and trans experiences. The museum continues to collect and care for that history.
