NYFE Summary

Families from Damascus and Aleppo helped establish this congregation after moving through the Lower East Side and Williamsburg. A new synagogue became a center of community life in Bensonhurst. The building retained a special role for the community even after many families moved elsewhere.

Bands of patterned brick and groups of round-arched windows decorate the front. The broad central arch and unusual stepped roofline distinguish the building from neighboring houses. The exterior offers a record of a community that carried its religious traditions to a new neighborhood.
