NYFE Summary

The building began as a carriage house on a country estate. After the main house burned, it was converted into a day hotel in 1826. New Yorkers came here for leisure away from the crowded city at the southern end of Manhattan. The hotel operated for only a few years before the building became a family home.

Later uses included housing for gas-company workers and Italian immigrants, and a soup kitchen. The museum now focuses on the day-hotel period. Guided visits use furnished rooms and the garden to explain how guests spent time here, when this part of the island was still a country destination.
