NYFE Summary
Isaac Valentine combined farming with work as a blacksmith. His house stood beside the Boston Post Road, where he could repair passing carriages and send crops to market. During the Revolution, British and American forces fought for control of the nearby road and bridge.
The Varian family later farmed the property for three generations. Urban development gradually replaced the surrounding farmland. The house was donated to the Bronx County Historical Society in 1965 and became the Museum of Bronx History. Its exhibitions use the house to explain the borough’s residents and its change from farms to city neighborhoods.
