NYFE Summary
The exchange traces its beginnings to the 1792 Buttonwood Agreement, when 24 brokers agreed on trading rules. Early trading sessions called out securities one by one while brokers sat in assigned chairs. That practice gave membership its familiar name: a seat on the exchange. Continuous trading and stock tickers later changed how the market worked.
From the street, look above the columns at the sculpted figures representing commerce and industry. The central figure stands for integrity. This is an exterior stop; the building's trading floor should not be treated as a public sightseeing space.
