NYFE Summary
Supporters revived the institution in this townhouse in 1949 after its earlier New York arts institute ran out of funds. The collection preserves paintings by a Russian-born artist who also designed theater sets and traveled through Central Asia. Mountain landscapes and religious subjects connect his interest in the Himalayas with his spiritual ideas.
Paintings fill three floors of the house. The museum also explains his campaign to protect cultural institutions during war and peace. That effort led to the Roerich Pact, signed by twenty-one American nations in 1935.
