NYFE Summary

Shipping merchant Robert Richard Randall left his fortune to support retired sailors. Sailors’ Snug Harbor provided residents with lodging, meals, clothing and medical care. The campus grew into a community with its own farm, dairy, bakery, workshops, hospital and music hall.

Building C is now part of the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, which also occupies Building G. Its Main Hall Gallery hosts exhibitions within the former sailors’ home.
