NYFE Summary

Hugo Sohmer’s company specialized in upright pianos for homes. Irving Berlin owned three of its instruments with keyboards that could shift to different keys. Piano production continued here until 1982, when the business moved to Connecticut.

The clock tower rises above long rows of arched factory windows. The narrow wings helped bring daylight to the work floors. The building is a surviving part of an industry that once filled New York with piano factories.
