NYFE Summary

St. Paul's began as an additional chapel for Trinity Church's growing congregation. A bucket brigade saved it during the fire that destroyed the first Trinity Church in 1776. George Washington attended a service here after his presidential inauguration in 1789, linking the chapel to the period when New York was the nation's capital.

After the September 11 attacks, the chapel survived beside the devastated World Trade Center site and became a center for relief work. Its fence gathered handmade memorials. The church's archival collections preserve records of that response and the people who used this small building during the recovery.
