NYFE Summary

The zoo began as an educational project on a former estate. Depression-era relief workers built its grounds and first building, which included classrooms, a laboratory and an auditorium. Teaching natural history was a stated purpose from the start.

Today the collection spans reptiles, fish, birds and mammals. The reptile wing includes rattlesnakes and other snakes, while the aquarium and outdoor exhibits introduce different habitats. These living collections continue the site’s original role as a place to learn about animals.
