NYFE Summary
The house was built for Benjamin Pike before William Steinway acquired it in the nineteenth century. The piano-making family used it as a home while developing a nearby factory and workers’ village. Its former rural setting has since become an industrial neighborhood.
Rough granite walls contrast with classical porch columns and round-arched tower windows. The plan spreads around a central hall, with a taller tower at one end. The surviving house preserves the scale of a merchant’s country estate within the changed surroundings.
