NYFE Summary
Artists, activists and Harlem residents established the museum in 1968. Its first home was on the second floor of a Fifth Avenue building. Early programs supported artists making new work and taught filmmaking to local students.
The museum presents art by artists of African descent and work influenced by Black culture. Its exhibitions and artist residency continue that focus. The current building is open for gallery visits, with pay-what-you-can tickets and free admission on Sundays.
