NYFE Summary

The museum began as a design laboratory supporting college teaching. Its early exhibitions used clothing borrowed from the Brooklyn Museum. As its own collections grew, conservators developed ways to care for garments and textiles, and the institution became a public fashion museum.

The collection preserves clothing and accessories from the eighteenth century to the present. Exhibitions use garments, textiles and related material to examine how dress reflects culture. Students and faculty also contribute exhibitions, while public lectures and discussions bring designers and researchers into the museum.
