NYFE Summary

The institution began in 1804 when a group of New Yorkers set out to preserve records of the city, state and young United States. Early collections included books, newspapers, maps, manuscripts and portraits. Its first decades were spent in borrowed and rented rooms before it acquired a home of its own.

The museum's permanent Tiffany lamp gallery grew from a different kind of collecting. Egon and Hildegard Neustadt bought their first lamp in a Greenwich Village antiques shop in 1935. Their collection later supplied a major gift to the museum.
