NYFE Summary
The eight-sided tower was the entrance and administrative center of the city’s asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Patients faced overcrowding and poor food. Charles Dickens admired the building during his 1842 visit but also described the distressing conditions inside.
The institution later became a general hospital. Its long wings were demolished, while the central tower was retained. The stone sides, paired windows and tall mansard roof preserve the outline of that entrance building.
