NYFE Summary
The Unisphere was the centerpiece of the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair and its theme of international understanding. It occupies the site used for the Trylon and Perisphere at the earlier 1939 fair. U.S. Steel supplied the stainless-steel globe as a permanent gift.
The three rings around the globe refer to early satellites. Raised mountain ranges add relief to the continents, and the open metal framework had to withstand wind without hiding the world’s outlines. Engineers calculated the uneven loads created by the continents and rings. The result is a globe 120 feet across, supported above the former fairgrounds.
