Gerritsen Beach

Gerritsen Beach is a residential community beside Shell Bank Channel and the waters of southern Brooklyn. Its waterfront library and nearby parkland provide different ways to understand the neighborhood?s setting and its development.

About Gerritsen Beach

The neighborhood developed as a planned community in the 1920s. Many of its bungalows were adapted over time, reflecting changes in the use and form of the residential area.

The library began in a small space in 1932 and moved to its purpose-built waterfront building in 1997. After Hurricane Sandy, it reopened following eleven months of repairs. A later roof and masonry project ended with another reopening in December 2025.

Places to explore

  • Gerritsen Beach Library

    2808 Gerritsen Avenue

The branch has an arched entrance, clock tower and a large window overlooking Shell Bank Channel. Brooklyn Public Library lists the building as fully accessible. Check opening hours and ask staff about access to the gardens and programs.

  • Seba Playground

Seba Avenue area, in Marine Park

The Parks trail map identifies this playground at the southern edge of the neighborhood. It offers a public-space stop distinct from the nearby residential streets; check current Parks information and posted conditions for access.

  • Marine Park and Salt Marsh Nature Center, nearby

Avenue U and Gerritsen Avenue area; separate park map area

Marine Park includes grassland, salt marsh and a nature trail. Use the Parks trail guide to choose a route and distinguish the nature center area from the residential streets and waterways of Gerritsen Beach.

Planning a visit

Brooklyn Public Library lists the B31 and B/Q connections for the branch; the subway is not at the library entrance. Check current bus and train service and the branch schedule before traveling.

The library has community-tended gardens; ask staff about access. Plumb Beach is across Plumb Beach Channel and is a separate destination, not an extension of the residential neighborhood?s mapped outline.
