Sheepshead Bay

Sheepshead Bay’s waterfront and residential streets tell a story of fishing, restaurants and neighborhood services. The former Lundy Brothers Restaurant faces the bay on Emmons Avenue, while the local library records a community campaign for a branch more than a century ago.

About Sheepshead Bay

Sheepshead Bay grew from a fishing and resort area into a residential community. In the 1930s the city rebuilt the waterfront and widened Emmons Avenue. Irving Lundy moved his seafood restaurant from a pier to a new building across the avenue during that work.

Designed by Bloch & Hesse and built in 1934, the former restaurant uses Spanish Colonial Revival details, including stucco, tiled roofs and arched openings. The city designated the building an individual landmark in 1992.

Places to explore

  • Former Lundy Brothers Restaurant exterior

1901–1929 Emmons Avenue at Ocean Avenue

The large former seafood restaurant stands across Emmons Avenue from the bay. Look for its low tiled roofs, stucco walls and arched openings. This is an exterior architectural stop; check with current occupants before expecting interior access.

  • Sheepshead Bay Library

    2636 East 14th Street at Avenue Z

Residents campaigned for a local branch, which opened in 1903. The present East 14th Street location, the branch’s fourth, has served readers since 1963. Check the library’s current hours and programs before visiting.

  • Emmons Avenue waterfront

    Emmons Avenue near Ocean Avenue

The sidewalk and promenade across from the former Lundy building provide a view toward the bay. The setting connects the restaurant to the waterfront improvements that reshaped this stretch in the 1930s. Follow public walkways and posted access restrictions.

Planning a visit

The B and Q serve Sheepshead Bay station; check the MTA’s current service information before travel. The library lists its East 14th Street address and notes that the branch is not accessible. The waterfront and library are separate stops, so allow time between them.

The former restaurant is a landmark exterior; check with present tenants about access. Use the public sidewalk and check the library’s schedule before making it your main destination.
