Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach occupies a Brooklyn peninsula between Sheepshead Bay and the ocean. Its history includes a nineteenth-century resort, later residential development and a public beach. Kingsborough Art Museum offers an indoor stop on the college campus.

About Manhattan Beach

Developer Austin Corbin established a summer resort here in 1877. Hotels and concerts were part of that era; residential development followed in the early twentieth century. The land now used for the public beach later served as a Coast Guard and maritime training station before the park opened in 1955.

Kingsborough?s art gallery began exhibiting in its Arts and Sciences Building location in 1976. On its fortieth anniversary it became the Kingsborough Art Museum, which presents exhibitions including work by students and faculty.
