Hamilton Heights

Hamilton Heights rises above the Hudson, with residential blocks, a former Broadway theater and a state park over the waterfront. The former Hamilton Theater and the Joseph Loth ribbon mill show different parts of the area?s early twentieth-century and industrial past.

About Hamilton Heights

In the nineteenth century the area around the theater was known as Carmansville. Transportation improvements and the opening of the Broadway subway in 1904 helped encourage further development. The former ribbon mill on Amsterdam Avenue is a reminder that industry also occupied the neighborhood.

The name also recalls Alexander Hamilton, whose country home was completed in 1802 on a 32-acre estate. Hamilton Grange now stands in St. Nicholas Park nearby, south of this guide?s mapped outline. City College, founded in 1847, is another nearby institution retained from the parent guide.
