Marine Park

Marine Park’s residential streets grew around former farmland and a planned park. The Hendrick I. Lott House preserves a physical link to that agricultural past; the park’s recreation fields offer a different kind of neighborhood stop.

About Marine Park

The Lott farm relied on enslaved workers as well as indentured and hired labor. The family farmed the site until 1925. Water and sewer lines and residential construction followed as former fields were divided.

The main house incorporates an older building as its eastern kitchen wing. The house and grounds are closed for restoration; its history can still be considered from the public street. Plans for Marine Park helped shape the surrounding residential neighborhood.

Places to explore

  • Hendrick I. Lott House exterior

    1940 East 36th Street

The older wing was incorporated into Hendrick Lott’s larger house. The house and grounds are closed, with no confirmed date for general interior access. View from the public sidewalk and check the operator’s updates.

  • Marine Park recreation area

    Along Fillmore Avenue

NYC Parks maps ballfields and courts in the park’s northern recreation area. Check the park map and posted notices for the particular facility you plan to use. The park extends well beyond the residential outline used here.

  • Former Lott farm streets

East 35th and East 36th streets near Fillmore Avenue

The surrounding blocks were once part of the farm. The house organization describes water lines, sewers and streets arriving as the area changed to residential use in the 1920s. The homes here are private; use public sidewalks.

Planning a visit

The Lott House is closed to public access while work is planned; the operator has not announced a reopening date. Check its current notice and event information before making it the focus of a visit.

The park and Salt Marsh Nature Center are larger than this guide’s neighborhood polygon. The salt marsh and trail are a separate nearby destination; consult NYC Parks for entrances and conditions. Check transit for the exact address and current service.
